The Melt Pile Necklace
I grew up in New York City in the 1980s and '90s, and gold jewelry like this was everywhere. Names in script, "Love", or "Best Friend." Dedications and photographs of the people you belonged to. Personalized gold worn right against the body, declaring who mattered.
Personalized gold nameplates and word jewelry took root in Black and Latino New York communities and became inseparable from the city’s hip-hop and street style through the 1980s and 1990s. By the ’90s, personalized gold had become a much broader New York language of identity, kinship, devotion, and self-definition.
Every charm on this necklace came from the melt pile in New York's Diamond District. Someone paid to have a word cut in 14K gold, or carried a photograph of people they loved around their neck. Then, somehow, all of it ended up there, waiting to be melted back into anonymous metal.
Care
Gold doesn't tarnish, but it does collect the oils and residue of a life well lived. Wipe with a soft cloth to keep it sharp. Keep it away from chlorinated water and harsh chemicals. Store it somewhere it won't get tangled. Wear it constantly and keep the love alive!
